Brazilian pop star Gil tours U.S.

Famed Brazilian singer Gilberto Gil is embarking on a U.S. tour to promote his album "Gil Luminoso," released last Thursday. The musician kicked off his first concert date in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Gil will perform in several cities throughout the month of March. Two shows are lined up back to back in California on the 24th and the 25th.

The tour will come to a close in Florida - first at the Miami Performing Arts Center in Miami, followed by a final date in Tampa.

The 64-year-old is currently serving as Brazil's Minister of Culture. Gil said, "As a minister, I have very little time to dedicate to music, so I have made choices marked by minimalism and taken a certain care in not to bet on adventures."

As a founder of the Tropicalism movement, the artist has also won a Grammy for best world music album, which he was awarded with in 1998.
