Travelling to Brazil: Canavieiras - BA

Canavieiras is an ecological space located along the Cacao Coast, in the south of the state of Bahia. It is comprised of seven marine islands. Specialized publications point to Canavieiras as being the largest natural fishing hole for snook – a noble fish – in Brazil. The city is bathed by the Pardo River. It has wide streets and historical site from the beginning of the century built in pleasant and colorful architecture. The island of Atalaia, located in front of the city, has 14 km of continuous beach, coconut trees and mangrove areas that are home to herons, parrots, parakeets and swallows, maintaining the food chain cycle of several marine and fluvial species. Ever present nature provides tourist and ecological activity, permitting long bicycle rides through wild trails, untouched beaches and much swimming in rivers and the sea.

Visiting Brazil: Itacare (BA)

For many years, the difficult access to Itacaré – more than 50 km on dirt roads – kept it isolated. The road connecting Ilhéus to Itacaré, BA-001, was finished in 1998. Since then, the number of tourists has increased constantly. Many hotels, inns and restaurants have been built. In addition, many beaches are deserted during most of the year. Itacaré is still the refuge for nature lovers, surfers and those in search of the real Bahia. The charm of the past is present on cobblestone streets and old houses. Night life in Iatacaré is very lively because of its many bars and restaurants. Its coast is a succession of beaches and hills covered with woods and palm trees. The beaches located near the city are the ones most frequented and have very good tourism infrastructure. The most distant ones are deserted and beautiful, but only a few can be reached by car. There are still some beaches so small and hidden away that they do not appear on any guide.

Climate:
The climate is tropical. Temperatures range from 25ºC to 30ºC, but they can climb to 40ºC in the summer – from December to February. The sun shines all year long, but during the winter months – May and August – rain is more frequent.

Gisele Bunchen get naked on TV

That's her new ad campaign for a local shoes company, called Ipanema. Interesting enough, the ad will probably attract the wrong audience...

Here is some pictures of the ad:

Visiting Brazil: Bonito (MS)

The city of Bonito is located on the southwestern corner of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul and can be visited any time of the year. But experienced travelers advise: the ideal time is between December and March – the rainy season. During that season, local vegetation is green, animals come out from their hides – since there is plenty of food to be taken -, rivers’ water levels are high and waterfalls are gorgeous.

Between May and August local fields are dry, there is constant burning for pasture and local fauna runs away looking for better hides. Visitors arriving to Bonito soon realize it: the word “bonito” (“beautiful”) is not enough to describe the wonders created by nature in that region. This humble city lost in the heartlands of Mato Grosso do Sul surprises everyone with its crystalline water rivers with plentiful fish, grouts and waterfalls that attract tourists from the world over. The great concentration of lime in the soil around the area where Bonito is located is responsible for the transparency of waters and by then existence of a wide variety of geological formations. And the best way of appreciating local natural beauties is by going on an adventure tourism tour.

The most indicated activities include diving in caverns, observing the underwater fauna and walking along trails in the forest. Places like Grutas do Lago Azul (Blue Lake Grouts) and the Mimoso Grout, the Natural Aquarium, ands rivers Sucuri, Peixe, Formoso and Prata, are the most indicated. There are a great number of grouts with underground, deep lagoons into which experienced divers may risk to explore. It was here, in Lagoa Misteriosa (Mysterious Lake), that diver Gilberto Menezes de Oliveira reached the depth of 121 metros, the deepest underwater dive ever recorded in Brazilian caverns. Some agencies offer dives going no deeper than 20 meters without risks for amateur divers, in the Mimoso Grout. But pay attention, espeleo-diving is indicated only to those who have great experience and an adequate equipment.

Bonito is a model-city in terms of tourism organization. It has adopted a system of visitations with the purpose of preserving the local natural environment. Therefore, tourists may only visit rivers, lakes, caverns and forests – the majority of which are located inside private properties – if accompanied of guides accredited by local agencies. To avoid negative impacts on nature, it has been established a maximum number of tourists per day who may visit each attraction. And nature thanks. Come and visit Bonito, and appreciate its natural beauties, in the very heartlands of Brazil. Those who come here just love it.

Weather:
Bonito’s weather is humid and tropical. It is hot and rainy between October and March. But between June and August, the weather is dry and cold, and temperatures may go below 10ºC. Annual average temperature is of 22ºC.

Visiting Brazil: Garopaba (SC)

Garopaba is located on the South coast of the State of Santa Catarina, with 8 beaches, each offering unique attractions. During the 1970’s, “foreigners" carrying backpacks and tents discovered this then small fishermen village, and started to lend the city a different air and color. This kicked changes that led to what today is a city that thanks to an adequate urban land legislation, still keeps the old characteristics of the original “village”, with one and two-story houses. Blessed by nature with beauty, the city is ideal for eco tourism and the practice of sports such as: surf, windsurf, hang gliding, paragliding, trekking and enduro. For those who appreciate lively parties and lively people, there is some fancy meeting "points" along Ferrugem beach.

Weather:
It is moderate and humid, without a dry season. Summer is hot, with average annual temperature of 18,3ºC, but reaching eventually temperatures close to 40ºC. Winter is mild, with average temperatures of 10ºC.

Did you know... (Brazil Curiosities - part I)

- Brazilian cats have only seven lives, not nine! (Gato tem 7 vidas...) What happened to the 2 missing lives?

- Building floors are counted from one above ground level. The first floor (primeiro andar) in Brazil is one above ground (terreo) level, not at street level as in US. Most buildings do have a 13th floor.

- Almost all houses in Brazil have internal water tanks, since public water supply may not be reliable. These water boxes are usually in the attic and hold about 1000 liters. Water pressure is low, so toilets don't flush as strong as in US. Paper waste is usually not put in toilet bowl, but in small basket in bathroom. (I am sure you really wanted to know this!!)

- Also, most houses to not have hot water tanks. Hot water is usually reserved for showers and is produced by an electrical heater attached to the shower head, wired at 220 volts. Nobody can consider themselves to have experienced the real Brazil until they get a 220 volt shock while standing in a puddle of water in their bare feet. It is very rare, but I know of people actually electricuted in the shower.

- Kissing upon greeting is common, except in work environments. Men kiss women. Women kiss men. Women kiss women. This is often done at first "How do you do" (muito prazer!). You may find yourself kissing perfect strangers. Oh yes, kisses are usually double cheek one two actions, the exception being in Sao Paulo where unmarried women will sometimes kiss each other a third time and mutter "para casar" (a charm to get married).

Caipirinha Recipe

1 lime
2 ounces of cachaça
Sugar to taste
Ice cubes

Wash the lime and roll it on the board to loosen the juices. Cut the lime into pieces and place them in a glass. Sprinkle with the sugar and crush the pieces (pulp side up) with a pestle. (We have a long, wooden one from Brazil, made specifically for this purpose.) Just enough to release the juice, otherwise it'll get bitter. Add the cachaça and stir to mix. Add the ice and stir again. It is delicious and potent!
