Letter from editor

Some people have been asking me what are my motivations to do this blog. The reason is simple, I love Brazil, I love Internet, and now that I discovered the Blog world (kind of late), it just become one of my favorite hobbies.

Of course the fact that I've worked for years as editor of an entertainment magazine in Brazil helped me a lot to get access to some of the content presented at this blog.

The idea is simple, post entertainment information about Brazil for foreign, expatriates, or just people who loves Brazil but couldn’t find good content in English. Yes, I know... my English sucks, but who cares! Maybe I will improve it after doing this for a while.

Suggestions are more than welcome, just send me an email and I will do my best to publish your request. Brazil is beautiful, has several awesome options for tourism and for have fun. So enjoy!

Nick

The band recently launched their new CD "Unbreakable", and has a DVD on the way. Scorpions will be playing in Sao Paulo on October 12th and in Porto Alegre on October 15th.

Live N Louder Rock Fest I

Twenty years after the entrance of Brazil in the circuit of the great tours, with the accomplishment of the first edition of the "Rock in Rio", in January of 1985, with famous international bands of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, the country will revive the feeling to have an openair festival again. We will have the accomplishment of "Live N ' Louder Fest Rock" on 12th of October, the stadium Osvaldo Teixeira Duarte "Canindé" (Portuguese Association of Sports), in São Paulo (SP).

After the "Rock in Rio", several other mega-events had been carried through in the country, always with Heavy Metal bands, Hard Rock bands and Rock in general: "Hollywood Rock", "M2000 Summer Concerts", "Skol Rock" and the "Monsters Of Rock". However, with the followed financial crises that had always devastated the country and support the events without heavy metal, the fans of Heavy Metal had lost the possibility to see diverse international bands together to the Brazilian bands. Much even so is notable the growth of festivals and other internal events of Rock and Heavy Metal, as traditional "Brasil Metal Union", "Porão do Rock", "Extreme Metal Fest", "ForCaos", "April Pro Rock", "Setembro Negro", "Roça N ' Roll" and many others, "Live ' N ' Louder" arrives to fill the gap left for the "Monsters Of Rock", that it had became itself a tradition.

For this edition, the following bands will present: Scorpions, Nightwish, Shaaman, Testament, Rage, 69 Eyes, Dr. Sin and Thuata de Dannan

Havaianas from Brazil!

Click to buy
The Zori (a Japanese style sandal) was the inspiration for the creation of the Havaianas sandal in 1962. The name Havaianas (pronounced ah-vai-YAH-nas), Portuguese for Hawaiians, was a tribute to America’s glamorous holiday destination. The addictive nature of these flip flops is largely due to a 42-year old secret rubber formula, which makes them butter-soft, bouncy, flexible and durable.

The idea for the new sandal was so simple that its success spread like wild-fire. In less than a year, São Paulo Alpargatas was making five pairs of Havaianas every second; which adds up to 125 million pairs per year. Since their launch, 2.2 billion pairs of Havaianas sandals have been produced and sold throughout the world. If the sandals were laid end to end, they would go around the world 50 times.

In Brazil, Havaianas are beloved and worn by all personalities from the average citizen to dignataries and celebrities. Since being introduced to the United States three years ago, Havaianas have created an unprecedented cult following. Now referred to as the “best rubber sandal in the world,” Havaianas can be seen gracing the pages of the hottest fashion and sport magazines, strutting down the runways at New York Fashion Week and featured at red carpet events. Stylish Americans, including top athletes, rock stars and celebrities demanded the butter-soft comfort of these inexpensive flip flops, making Havaianas available at the most chic retailers and surf boutiques nationwide.

Capoeira - Part I

Capoeira is a martial art developed in Brazil by enslaved Africans. The true history of the art is unclear, but most people believe the following:

In the 1500's many Africans were taken from different areas of West Africa and brought to Brazil to be used as slaves by the Portuguese. They were taken from their land, but their culture and desire for freedom could not be taken away. With this need for freedom growing, these people began developing techniques for defending themselves and for escape.

Of course slaves could not be allowed to practice martial arts, so the development and practice of the art had to be disguised. The natural disguise for the art was as a dance being that in Africa dance and music are the most popular forms of expression. So these "slaves" developed a way of practicing different defensive and offensive techniques with music, singing, and dance.
